I have lived in Suffolk all my life and left a financial services background in 1996 to have my first child and help my husband set up his now very well established central heating business.  After starting a youth club in our village in 2002 with a group of friends, I discovered a real enthusiasm for working with young people.  Once my three children had all started school I embarked on a degree course, graduating in 2008 with honours. From there I embarked on a nine year career in education, working with teenagers with a range of social, behavioural and learning difficulties.

During this time, I became acutely aware of the immense difficulties facing teenagers in education today and whilst schools do their best do address these issues, the system is ill-equipped to deal with the variety and complexity of problems with which they are faced on a daily basis.  I wanted to do more to help and left my job at Hartismere School in Suffolk to become a Wellbeing Coach using Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), studying with Master Practitioner Sue Bayliss in Norwich in 2017.

Using my experience in education alongside coaching and mentoring skills, I work with teenagers and parents to address a range of issues in order to overcome boundaries which may be preventing them from achieving their full potential.  These could be issues such as anxiety or depression, friendship or relationship issues, school refusal, social or behavioural difficulties, low self-esteem and confidence issues, self-harm, social media and gaming addiction.  They could also be problems associated with coping with a divorce or a bereavement.  I have also worked at length with teenagers who need help with time management, sleep deprivation and dietary advice.

Coaching sessions typically comprise of guided communication led by the NLP framework in order to assess a client’s present mental and emotional state.  Further discussion would focus on the causes of this state in order to develop a strategy to work towards a more desirable state and ultimately, the achievement of their desired outcomes or goals. I firmly believe that all young people have the resources within themselves to become strong and motivated individuals and to realise their full worth and potential, no matter what their difficulties.

As a qualified careers adviser, I feel strongly that having career goals and being armed with the information on how to achieve them is an important part of the mentoring and coaching process. Young people often feel bewildered by the array of opportunities available in further and higher education but I have experienced at first-hand how inspirational and life-changing, high quality careers advice can be.
